Search engine optimisation or SEO can seem daunting and complex – but most people can easily understand the basics. With just a little bit of knowledge you can make a big difference.
What is it?
Simply put, it’s ensuring your website can be found by search engines through keywords and phrases that are relevant to what you do. Search engines, like Google, read through your content and give it a score based on how well it matches what someone is looking for. For your website to be listed high in search results, your keywords need to appear on your website in a relevant context. There are a plethora of scoring criteria when you get into the detail, but we’ll save that for another day.
Hopefully you’ll already have goals for your website to help you identify keywords and phrases that people might use. Most charity website goals will be around increasing online donations, increasing event attendance or simply increasing newsletter sign ups. Whatever your website goals are, the closer they are aligned to your keywords the more sense you’ll be able to make out of the results.
SEO your content
We’ve split out a few easy things you can do today into two areas: on page and behind the scenes.
On page is all about your content. Write in a conversational tone that can be easily understood.
✓ Avoid jargon
✓ Write good, quality content that is relevant
✓ Use relevant keywords to help people find your content
✓ Ensure your page content does the title justice
✓ Use strategic anchor text, instead of text links such as ‘click here’
Behind the scenes
Behind the scenes is making sure your pages are set up correctly in your content management system or CMS.
✓ The page title should contain a relevant keyword
✓ Use the meta description to explain the purpose of your page (it will show in your organic search listing)
✓ Use Image ALT text to describe the content of the image
✓ Break up your content and make it readable by using header tags – H1, H2, H3
✓ Use internal links to link to other pieces of content on your website
Start with the basics
The best thing to do if you haven’t done any SEO before is to just get started.
